I’m from Alabama; it sounds like it in the way I talk. What I say though is very different from what you might hear from most Alabama pastors. Before coming to LUMC, I acted as District Superintendent in the United Methodist Church. I am a philosopher of religion, a poet, and a songwriter.
I have a book entitled Zero Theology: Escaping Belief Through Catch 22s (here) about freeing Christianity from its dependence on holding certain beliefs. “My goal is not to align straightforward, comforting religious beliefs with some proposed metaphysical structure of the universe. My goal is to live a free and transcendent life” and to encourage others to do the same.
I have a Spotify channel (here) with my contemplations about life in the form of songs that cover various genres. I enjoy honest, vulnerable conversations and believe in following them wherever they lead rather than guiding them to some predetermined theological outcome.
If you would like to have a conversation with me, email me at john@whidbey.com, and we’ll set up a time.
